SUMMARY:2025 Summertime Event: Furnacetown
DESCRIPTION:All Pack 1 scouts and families are invited to join us at Furnacetown on July 13th 10am-1pm.\n  \nCost $6 per person.\n  \nNassawango Iron Furnace\nFrom 1828-1850 the Nassawango Iron Furnace was in its heyday. Many workers – miners\, sawyers\, colliers\, molders\, draymen\, and bargemen – labored to make iron. They gathered bog ore from Nassawango swamp\, brought clam and oyster shells up the canal via the Pocomoke River from the Chesapeake Bay\, and made charcoal in the Pocomoke Forest. \nThese raw materials were loaded into the Iron Furnace from the top\, heated to 3\,000 degrees\, and the two resulting liquids were drawn off at the bottom of the furnace. Slag was cooled and tossed into the swamp. Iron was poured into molds and loaded onto barges which were towed down the canal by mule to waiting ships for transport to Baltimore\, Philadelphia\, and New York. \nMaryland Iron Company\nFurnace Town (also called Nescongo or Nasseongo) was a company town\, built by the Maryland Iron Company. About 300 people lived and worked here. Families tended gardens\, hunted for sustenance\, kept house\, cooked\, and cleaned. Children did chores\, went to school (sometimes)\, and played. Contemporary reports paint a picture of small neat yards and flowers in bloom\, amidst the noisy industry. There were blacksmiths\, broom makers\, wainwrights\, wheelwrights\, bakers\, cobblers\, coopers\, and weavers among the skilled workers. \nBy 1850 bankruptcy was declared. The sale advertisement listed 7\,000 acres embracing immense beds of iron ore. Included in the offering were the Furnace\, the Grist Mill and Saw Mill\, the Iron Master’s Mansion\, houses\, store\, barns\, buildings\, tools\, 21\,000 bushels of charcoal\, and 1\,650 tons of ore. \nFollowing the insolvency\, all of the residents\, previously employed in the service of the Furnace moved away to seek employment. A few families stayed on to run a boarding house and the Grist Mill. By 1929\, only the foundations of the buildings and the Furnace remained. All of the wooded structures had rotted away\, and the Forest reclaimed the previously bustling worksite. \nRestoration work began under the guidance of the Worcester County Historical Society in the 1960’s. In 1982\, Furnace Town Foundation Inc. was formed to own\, operate\, and interpret the museum historic site. \nWhat to Expect: Artisan Tours and Interactive Stations\nDuring your tour\, Scouts will have the chance to visit a variety of interactive stations\, depending on availability. Stations may include: \n\n\nThe Woodworker’s Shop \n\n\nThe Blacksmith \n\n\nThe Broom Maker \n\n\nThe Weaver \n\n\nThe School House \n\n\nThe Nassawango Iron Furnace \n\n\nOutdoor Recreation & Games \n\n\nHousehold Living \n\n\nEach station offers a hands-on approach to learning about the skills and daily lives of the past\, making history both educational and fun. \nBring a bagged Lunch to eat outdoors following the event!\n  \nActivity (Class B) uniforms preferred\, but not required. \nRSVP via Ticket Purchase is required by July 12th.

SUMMARY:Leaders Retreat: Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation
DESCRIPTION:BASIC ADULT LEADER OUTDOOR ORIENTATION (BALOO): \nThis course is designed as an introduction to the Cub Scout outdoor program for those leaders who are interested in adding a camping component to their Den or Pack activities. \nWho should take BALOO? \n\nThe BSA requires that you have at least one BALOO-trained adult on every Cub Scout Den or Pack overnight outdoor event.\nA BALOO-trained leader should be at any overnighter regardless of whether it is a Pack\, District or Council event.\nHaving at least one BALOO-trained adult will make your Cub Scouts’ camping experience as awesome as it can be; but more is even better!\n\nThis Event is for Registered Leaders of Pack One Only\, NO YOUTH \nWhy should I take BALOO? \n\nLeaders who complete BALOO training are better prepared to plan pack den or pack overnight events.\nYou’ll learn how to make camping activities and outings fun. You’ll discover how to keep your Cub Scouts safe and entertained. And you’ll learn how to plan an event that’s rooted firmly in Cub Scouting’s principles.\nSuccessful experiences in the outdoors make Cub Scouts — and their parents — more likely to keep coming back.\n\nHow do I take BALOO? \n\nBALOO consists of two components: online and hands-on. You’ll need to complete both — in order — to qualify as a “Trained” Cub Scout outdoor leader.\n\nOnline component: The online portion of BALOO is available 24/7 on the BSA Learn Center. The goal of the online portion is to make the best use of time to allow leaders to experience as much as possible during the practical hands-on training.  The online training contains introductory and basic information that will be built upon during the practical training.  If you do not present your BALOO online training certificate\, they still will have you take part in the BALOO Training\, but your training will not be entered as complete.  To take the Prerequisite go to https://my.scouting.org/  Click on these:\n\nBSA Learn Center\nExpanded Learning\nBALOO\nBALOO Prerequisite Training\nAdd Plan\nMy Learning\nBSA Learn Center\nExpanded Learning\nBALOO\nBALOO Prerequisite Training\nAdd Plan\nMy Learning\nPlease bring a copy of your BALOO Prerequisite Training completion certificate to the Training.\n\n\nPractical\, hands-on component: In this 1.5-day course\, BSA’s Cub Scout level camping policies will be taught along with the necessary tools to help Packs and Dens carry out a successful camping experience.  Completion of this course is mandatory for at least one adult on a Pack overnighter.\n\n\n\nWHEN: Friday 6:00pm to Sunday 9:00am (Check-In opens at 5:30pm) \n  \n\nPack One Scouters Register HERE
